So it was an earthquake after all. I was wondering why my house was shaking so violently last night. At first, I thought we were hit by a tornado or something, as wind blows pretty hard out here. And there was no report on radio or online immediately when I checked. And the epicentre was not far from where I live, no wonder the house was rocking like that. A picture from my wall dropped to the floor during the quake – so that was the only “damage” as far as I am concerned.

…since this picture was taken. It doesn’t seem like a long time though for the memories are still vivid. 1st of January 1998 (a few days or may be weeks before this picture was taken by the way, if I remember correctly) – the whole class got punished because some of us decided to enjoy the new year’s eve a bit too much…happy days!!!

How’s this for a wedding!?!
I was going to the city centre earlier today and saw a couple of young guys checking some “interesting” websites in their work through the window that faced the back street. I think its some sort of social service department. No wonder we get to hear more about scandals here than about actual work of these departments these days. I didn’t dare snap a photograph, but certainly got a smile on my face seeing those civil servants’ antics!!!
This used to be my office by the way, and no, I wouldn’t dare visit such websites while at work

कहिलेकाँही नेपालीमा लेख्ने सुर चल्छ मलाई – आज सुर चलेको छ धेरैपछि। तर विषयबस्तु भने अग्रनिर्धारित हैन। खासमा मलाई आज अचानक मेरा विद्यालय जीवनका साथीहरू तथा ती वर्षहरुका याद अायो, अनि मेरा विद्यालयका कोही साथीहरू इन्टरनेटमा भेटिन्छन्कि भनेर गूगल गर्दा नेपाली साहित्यकारहरूको नामावली भएको पृष्ठमा पुगेँ। त्यहाँ भएका केही नामहरूका उपनाम देख्दा त्यस बारेमै केही लेखौँ जस्तो लागेर नेपालीमा कलम चलाउँदैछु टाइप गर्दैछु। उपनामहरूका बारेमा केही लेख्नुभन्दा पहिले मेरो गुगल-खोजीको परिणामका बारेमा भनिहालौं कि? मैले मेरो प्राथमिक विद्यालयको एक साथीको (एकदम मिल्ने साथीको) वेबसाइट भेट्टाएँ – मान्छु एकदम नसोचेको कुरा तर असम्भव के छ र यो दुनियाँमा। यहाँ छ मेरो साथीको वेबसाइट!!
अब अजब-गजबका उपनामका बारेमा केही भनौं। पहिले पहिले मलाई मान्छेका (विशेषत: साहित्यकारहरुका) उपनामहरू सुन्दा, अनि देख्दा लाग्थ्यो कि तिनीहरुले आफ्नो चरित्र अनुसारको वा अाफ्नो व्यक्तित्व झल्कने उपनाम राख्छन्। मेरो त्यो सिद्धान्त धेरै टिकेन – मेरो माध्यामीक विद्यालयमा एक अंग्रेजी पढाउने शिक्षक हुनुहुन्थ्यो, “अाँशु” उपनाम गरेका, तर मैले कहिल्यै उहाँका अाँखामा अाँशुका झल्का पनि देखिन। तर आफ्नो जन्मथलो झल्काउने उपनामहरू भने साँचोनै हुनुपर्छ – गयर-ओखलढुङ्गेले “ओखलढुङ्गे” उपनाम त पक्कै राख्दैन होला नि हैन त? तर “गाँउले” उपनाममा भने म विश्वास गर्दिन – सहरियाले (गाँउमा पाहिला नराखेकाले) पनि “गाँउले” उपनाम राखेको देखेको छु मैले। किन? म यसै भन्न सक्दिन – तर मेरो तर्क भने यस्तो छ – साधारणतया गाँउलेहरू भन्नासाथ हामी सोझा चरित्र, अनि सरल जीवन जिउने मान्छेका चित्रण गर्छौं, अनि “गाँउले” उपनाम राखेर अाफूलाई त्यही सरल, निष्कपट जीवन जिउने व्यक्तिहरूको दर्जामा राख्न चाहेका होलान् उनीहरूले!! “बसन्तपुरे” उपनामका बारेमा भने मलाई केही भन्नु छैन – सिबाय यति कि यो उपनाम पनि गयर-बसन्तपुरेहरुले पनि राख्ने गरेको जस्तो लाग्छ मलाई। तर मलाई थाहा नभएको बसन्तपुरबासी पनि हुन सक्छन् तिनीहरू।
