After spending nearly a whole day tweaking the CSS, the Header, and the Footer on the original K2 style, I have come up with this new-look random jottings…. Its quite a significant facelift compared to what I had before. From a three column theme, I have opted back to two column style. I hope you find it visually pleasing than my old theme, and also easy to navigate around. Would love to hear your comments as to where I can improve on this theme and how to make it even better to the eyes!
As for the theme, I have decided to stick with K2 theme for now – for a number of reasons. First, you can create as many visual styles as you want and stick those in style folder under the K2 theme folder. You can then choose the one you want by just going to the K2 Option page in the admin area. K2 supports widgets very nicely, so its easy to arrange/rearrange stuffs on the sidebar. It has some cool AJAX features, some of which I haven’t even tried to use yet, such as the live archives. So, there is room to do more with this theme.
And, now I have my own visual style for K2…how cool is that?…and I have called it Plain RJ 0.1.
Tried the new WordPress 2.1, “Ella” as a local install yesterday. Some of the added features, such as importing from WordPress, more options with links and categories, revamped editor that allows you to switch between visual and code mode through tabs, etc. are pretty cool. And these added features meant, I couldn’t wait any longer to upgrade my live WP install.
Fortunately most of the plugins that I have installed are still working and the theme that I have modified has been working without any problem as well…so all in all, I’m pretty happy about the upgrade.
I am currently creating a new visual layout for the K2 theme on my local install WP and when thats done, I’ll probably change my theme to K2…for now the old face of random jottings… stays!
I was actually planning to post a proper entry but now I can only manage a quick update as I have to leave in 15 minutes to catch a train to London for tomorrow’s Bhaitika. First a few words on changes to my blog. Regular readers might have noticed the disappearance of a couple of larger thumbnails from the left sidebar of this blog – one showing the latest entry in my photoblog, and another, a slideshow of thumbnails from my picasa web albums. I have decided to remove both of those as I noticed a significant delay in loading this blog when they were on. I am gutted, especially, for having to remove the thumbnail showing the last entry in my photoblog. Thats was such a nice feature, and I must thank Taly again for providing me with the php code to make that happen. Sadly, I won’t be using that code again until I find a way to load the blog faster with the code on

Here comes the closing post for July 2006, the month I feel I’m back to the regular blogging mode…well, sort of. This is my 10th post for this month, which means one-third of the month I blog(ged)…that’s a good frequency for me! I don’t want to make this post just a statistics though – the 10th post – without substance. Since this is the last day of July, I want to talk about a few things that have happened (been happening) to random jottings…, poudyal blog, and my online presence in general over the past few months, especially in July. Frequent visitors here might have noticed, random jottings… has undergone a massive facelift recently. And much more than spending time writing posts, I have been spending time designing this “face of the blog” and learning a thing or two about php scripts and coding along the way. For a web enthusiast like me, with no background whatsoever in programming languages and scripts, its a huge achievement.

After reading Niranjan’s blog entry on the new theme, which he has been using for a few days now at nirlog.com, I also decided to give WP-Andreas09 a try, the result of which you can see now. This is indeed a very nice and flexible theme, especially with its built in Widgets support.
Although the theme has a lot of built-in colour options (14 altogether!), I didn’t like most of them. I prefer darker colours with good contrast for main content area, and somehow I didn’t find any colour options exactly how I wanted them. So, I decided to tweak CSS a bit in Striped Black colour option and now I have a new background for the blog title/subtitle area. I’ll probably be doing bits of tweaking here and there on this theme over the coming days and weeks to make it look like the way I want – until I get tired basically !!
But overall, I am quite happy with this theme and will probably be keeping it for a while now.
