First a couple of screengrabs to show what I am ranting about below

Suddenly all my Google Apps email accounts have started showing additional (and largely redundant) labels (folders on my IMAP), and I have no idea why. I am guessing its because they call Gmail Googlemail in the UK, but then they could just have changed the existing root folder name from Gmail to Googlemail rather than creating an extra root folder called Googlemail under which I see a set of labels (which obviously become folders on IMAP) that are basically redundant – like Sent Mail, Drafts, Spam etc. These labels are redundant because the default labels/folders for sent mails is still set to be [Gmail]/Sent Mail and default for draft emails set to be [Gmail]/Drafts and so on. So these [Google Mail]/Sent Mail, [Google Mail]/Drafts and so on are redundant and annoying really, especially on my Apple Mail. I have of course tried to delete these labels, they can be deleted but they appear again few minutes after, I guess automatically created by the system! The only solution now is to make them ‘hidden’ on IMAP but only the labels/folders are hidden but the root folder [Google Mail] still shows up in Apple Mail’s list of IMAP folders…

Not that I’ve been updating my blogs too often these days (I do have genuine enough reasons for that) but still, ever since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, my preferred blog editor, ecto, has stopped working, it opens and within a few seconds it crashes. I tried clean reinstalling but to no avail. When I have posted a few entries recently, those have been using ScribeFire add-on on firefox, which, by the way is excellent. However, I prefer using non-browser blogging clients, those that blend well with the OS and provide easy way to resize and upload images. I saw this half-price offer on myBlogEdit on macZOT! so I thought I should give it a try before I decide to splash out 10 bucks on it, which already looks a good deal as I play around with this blogging client! And to complete the text, here is a picture I took a couple of weeks ago…

This was the scene from my front door (seen through the small glass panel on the top of the closed door!) yesterday. And this post is a test post really to check a plugin – LR2/Blog – that allows me to export photo from Lightroom straight onto my wordpress blog!

Looks like it works too, but it was a bit slow uploading the picture and loading this edit page, and oh you cannot choose the category directly from the Lightroom either. So I guess this plugin is best suited at the moment for just uploading the picture and you can use it later to add on to your post [this is added here from the 'Edit Post' page within the WordPress admin].

…is the new address for random jottings…, with a new (and probably more apt) tagline “procrastination with purpose” . I always thought it was pretty lame to have a personal blog on .org domain, and mahesh.poudyal.org did sound very lame to begin with, but somehow I stuck with it for a good few years, probably because it became more familiar and I became more comfortable with it over time. Anyway, I had this new domain for almost a year now – I got it as soon as I saw procrastination.com – on one of those days when I was avoiding doing any work by doing everything else but THE WORK! I have been like that these past few days – working for an hour and avoiding the same for a couple of hours so its like walking two steps forward and a step back. Nevertheless, two hours of avoidance for one hour of work has produced something – the migration of rj… to this new address, and more importantly a whole facelift for poudyal blog, also on a new address – pixels.iprocrastinate.co.uk. I decided to have my photoblog on Pixelpost this time as opposed to my usual favourite WordPress, mainly because it is purpose built for photoblogs, and more importantly it lets me post a picture directly from Adobe Lightroom without having to log on through the browser and so on.

For now I’ll leave all the old contents on rj… here and pb over at its old address. I have already moved every single post with all the comments intact from old rj… site to its new address, however, it’s a bit complicated moving posts from old photoblog to the new one, mainly because of the different platform it uses. Also I feel I should start afresh with my photography, as I’m been a bit of a slacker lately when it comes to photography, and this blank canvas of a blog might inspire me to take and post new and better pictures, fingers crossed. So there it is – the announcement of changing addresses, online.

So visit http://iprocrastinate.co.uk/ for random jottings…, and http://pixels.iprocrastinate.co.uk/ for poudyal blog. Please also update the address for the RSS feeds (if you subscribe to either) to these new addresses. Thanks.

Now on a different note, I hadn’t even heard of this Benjamin Button movie until the nominations for the Oscars were announced earlier today! So I decided to watch it to find out why it deserved 13 nominations. I wasn’t disappointed. Although a bit weird to begin with, the movie is totally gripping – after a bit, everything starts to feel normal, no weirdness of people “growing” young (did I just give out the spoiler!?!) and all that. It’s a beautifully made film and very original too. Deserves every accolade imo. Watch it!

Your prof sends you a friend request in facebook, what would you do? I just got that and had no choice but to accept the request. First option would be to put her/him on the ‘limited profile’ list but sooner or later they’d ask you why they can only see your ‘distilled’ profile while they see a detailed one for their other students! I just decided to accept the friend request without any limitations, but here’re the steps I took before accepting that request:

Go through all your pictures, remove any indecent ones (I didn’t have any luckily! or did I miss some?)

Check any comments, notes you have made in the past seven days (assumption is that s/he wouldn’t look beyond that!), or within those that show up in your profile page and remove those that you don’t want your prof to see (same thing goes for the bosses too!)

If you seem to be spending a lot of time on facebook, i.e., too many comments within a short span of time, same day or same week then remove some, create gaps enough to make him/her believe that you are not a facebook addict and you do spend time doing your work as well (especially important if you are the ones ‘working from home’)

Now that you have added your prof as a ‘friend’ (fortunately mine has always been like a friend), you should:

Not put up pictures that will make you feel uncomfortable facing her/him in the next meeting.

Not leave any comments on his pictures, status messages and so on like you do on your other friends. Even if your prof/boss is like a ‘friend’, remember s/he’s not your high-school buddy.

Be careful when you leave comments on your other friends’ pictures, status messages, notes etc., your prof/boss can always see those through the feeds.

Not leave too many comments in a day or a week, or change status messages too much – don’t give her/him any hint you are addicted to facebook!

Well, writing that was fun, lets see how adding my prof on facebook will be like!

I think there is a bank or some finance company with that name, ing (or ING in caps), but given what is going on with the financial sector this year, I don’t think I should venture into that area…better left that with the experts. What I had in mind when I typed those three letters on the title was more interesting (or may be mundane to many) “ing”s from the web world – such as google-ing, f’buk-ing (or facebook-ing to save myself from someone’s wrath!), flickr-ing, twitter-ing, and so on and so forth. Unconsciously it seems I’ve just listed these “ing”s on the order that I most use.

Google-ing has become ubiquitous with web use, and my online presence starts with opening gmail and ends with closing it! In between google is the preferred search engine, google news summarises the news, google ((btw, isn’t “google” supposed to have been added to dictionary officially? my spell-checker tells me I have made spelling error on it! And gives me suggested words like “googol”, “goggle”, “go-ogle” (my fav) and “go ogle”!!)) map provides the directions (and terrain and satellite images), google scholar searches for academic works, google calendar keeps me on schedule (sms notification is great!), and google documents mean i can open the ms office attachments without having to download them locally, and even edit them and send them back all from within the web browser! And it doesn’t end there either, I have google mail setup on mobile which means all I need is mobile network coverage, and I’m google-ing! Well, enough of google-ing now…

As seen somewhere in northern Ghana

It probably wouldn’t be an exaggeration if I said facebook-ing has become almost an addiction, at least as far as “status updates” go. I don’t count how many times I “update” my “status” but too many times to count probably, of course as long as I have access to internet, either on my comp or on my mobile. Although these days I prefer to use just my mobile for status updates on facebook, for the new interface is frankly irritating. And with slow connection, it seems there is always something remaining to “load”, which means by browser’s activity indicator is always flashing when I’m on the facebook…Its just annoying!

It seems I’ve pretty much stopped flickr-ing since the past couple of months. My flickr-ing interest declined after I reached that 200 free photo limit I think. I can still upload more but the older ones will be hidden until I pay for a “pro” account. So, I have setup my iPhoto to upload pictures on facebook instead for now, and I still have a photoblog (although updated less frequently – due to slow connection as well as less time spent on pursuing photography while I’m on the field). Oh talking of blogs, there is blog(g)ing of course. Again, its becoming less frequent but I keep thinking I shall make it a regular activity so have not given up on that yet. Sometimes think of going back to blogging anonymous just so that I can be less restrictive on what I write and who I write about but then think again if I want to write why should I hide behind the veil of anonymity. Either way, as long as this gets updated once in a while I should be happy…for now!

Twitter-ing I tried a bit but somehow didn’t strike a chord with me. Still “twitter” once in a while from mobile but it has become something of a passing interest. Well, I think that’s all for the web “ing”s for now.
