FB dilemma

January 8th, 2009 Comments off

Your prof sends you a friend request in facebook, what would you do? I just got that and had no choice but to accept the request. First option would be to put her/him on the ‘limited profile’ list but sooner or later they’d ask you why they can only see your ‘distilled’ profile while they see a detailed one for their other students! I just decided to accept the friend request without any limitations, but here’re the steps I took before accepting that request:

  1. Go through all your pictures, remove any indecent ones (I didn’t have any luckily! or did I miss some?)
  2. Check any comments, notes you have made in the past seven days (assumption is that s/he wouldn’t look beyond that!), or within those that show up in your profile page and remove those that you don’t want your prof to see (same thing goes for the bosses too!)
  3. If you seem to be spending a lot of time on facebook, i.e., too many comments within a short span of time, same day or same week then remove some, create gaps enough to make him/her believe that you are not a facebook addict and you do spend time doing your work as well (especially important if you are the ones ‘working from home’)

Now that you have added your prof as a ‘friend’ (fortunately mine has always been like a friend), you should:

  1. Not put up pictures that will make you feel uncomfortable facing her/him in the next meeting.
  2. Not leave any comments on his pictures, status messages and so on like you do on your other friends. Even if your prof/boss is like a ‘friend’, remember s/he’s not your high-school buddy.
  3. Be careful when you leave comments on your other friends’ pictures, status messages, notes etc., your prof/boss can always see those through the feeds.
  4. Not leave too many comments in a day or a week, or change status messages too much – don’t give her/him any hint you are addicted to facebook!

Well, writing that was fun, lets see how adding my prof on facebook will be like! :P

Really SimpleScripts…

October 28th, 2008 2 comments

Upgrading WordPress used to be such a pain (although WP website would claim otherwise with their “5-minute install/upgrade” instructions) – even if it involved fairly simple tasks like downloading, uploading, deleting or overwriting files and folders using ftp! Now thanks to SimpleScripts, even that is not necessary. All I need to do is deactivate all the plugins (one click) and use SimpleScripts to upgrade my WP install (another click, and a tick to agree to its disclaimer!) – all automated and from the server. No need to download, upload, zip, unzip, delete, overwrite, or anything like that…what a relief! Cheers SimpleScripts!

…ing

September 24th, 2008 1 comment

I think there is a bank or some finance company with that name, ing (or ING in caps), but given what is going on with the financial sector this year, I don’t think I should venture into that area…better left that with the experts. What I had in mind when I typed those three letters on the title was more interesting (or may be mundane to many) “ing”s from the web world – such as google-ing, f’buk-ing (or facebook-ing to save myself from someone’s wrath!), flickr-ing, twitter-ing, and so on and so forth. Unconsciously it seems I’ve just listed these “ing”s on the order that I most use.

Google-ing has become ubiquitous with web use, and my online presence starts with opening gmail and ends with closing it! In between google is the preferred search engine, google news summarises the news, google ((btw, isn’t “google” supposed to have been added to dictionary officially? my spell-checker tells me I have made spelling error on it! And gives me suggested words like “googol”, “goggle”, “go-ogle” (my fav) and “go ogle”!!)) map provides the directions (and terrain and satellite images), google scholar searches for academic works, google calendar keeps me on schedule (sms notification is great!), and google documents mean i can open the ms office attachments without having to download them locally, and even edit them and send them back all from within the web browser! And it doesn’t end there either, I have google mail setup on mobile which means all I need is mobile network coverage, and I’m google-ing! Well, enough of google-ing now…
